Four bold n' bodacious women try not to lose their heads in The Revolutionists – an irreverent, rebellious, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution – onstage at Lost Nation Theater for two weeks only: Thursdays-Sundays, June 5-15.
Amidst the Reign of Terror, four renegades—an assassin, a spy, a writer, and, of course Marie Antoinette — hangout, plot murder, find friendship, and try to beat back extremist insanity.
The Revolutionists is by Lauren Gunderson – the most produced living American playwright.
Lost Nation Theater previously performed her play Silent Sky in 2018
- the year Gunderson wrote The Revolutionists!
Lost Nation Theater is assembling a crackerjack cast & creative ensemble.
In a bit of meta-casting, actor & playwright Abby Paige plays playwright Olympe De Gouges.
Brittney Malik is back to play the spy – Marianne Angelle.
Stacia Richards tackles Charlotte Corday.
Stoph Scheer embodies the Queen – Marie Antoinette.
With direction by Katie Genzer, sumptuous design by Mark Evancho (set), Cora Fauser (costumes), Charlotte Seelig (lights & sound) and Andrea Stander (masks), LNT’s The Revolutionists will take you on an inspiring rollercoaster ride.
Production Stage Manager Angie Calfa; Ann Harvey (best known as a director and singer) serving as Properties & Set Dressing Guru; and LNT Artistic Directors Kim Bent and Kathleen Keenan complete the production team.

“This show is hilarious, fast-paced, and, unfortunately, getting more relevant by the minute.
I think it’s about different kinds of courage — the courage to speak the truth, to be who you are, to give your life for a cause, to take matters into your own hands. It’s also about friendship, and the way that friends give us courage and help us to become our best, bravest selves.
AND this play passes the Bechdel test with flying colors!”
- Abby Paige.
You likely remember Abby from her appearances in David Budbill's Judevine, Two For Christmas, Pride and Prejudice, or Tartuffe - as well as her original solo shows: Piecework: When We Were French, and Les Filles du QUOI? (which LNT premeried in 2022.)
Stoph (playing Marie Antoinette) has appeared onstage with LNT since 2009! Most recently, as Charlotte (and nearly 40 others) in the solo: I Am My Own Wife at LNT last spring.
Brittney & Stacia are back with LNT after making their 'debuts' with the company last fall in The Tempest. Stacia portrayed Prospero's daughter Miranda, and Brittney - the King who banished Prospero, but in the end sees the error of his ways.
Much of the fun in The Revolutionists is the verbal gymnastics of the often uproarious script. Like…did Marie Antoinette really say "chutzpah"?
All the boisterous banter is performed under the looming shadow of the guillotine. “This play is packed with personality and its shifting rhythms really keep you on your toes.” – director Katie Genzer
In a blisteringly funny portrayal, The Revolutionists depicts four real-life badass women who fight for the equality of all women and for the love of their country.
Lauren Gunderson is the maestro of marrying historical fact and inventive fiction creating spicy & satisfying theatrical experiences replete with tasty morsels of truth.
The Revolutionists features very real women who lived boldly: playwright Olympe De Gouge, assassin Charlotte Corday, queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette. The fourth in our quartet of characters - spy & Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle, is a composite of several real women of color who fought for equality during the French and Haitian Revolutions.
It may be fiction, but it’s not fake!
LNT believes a good story can help sustain us and bring us together in challenging times. It’s one reason why founding artistic director Kim Bent is so excited to share this remarkable show with Vermont:
-
“I’ve been eager to stage another Lauren Gunderson play ever since we did Silent Sky.
Her Revolutionists script asks the same question Anias Mitchell boils down to one lyric in Hadestown:
“Whatcha gonna do when the chips are down??"
The Critics Rave:
“…a sassy, hold-on-to-your-seats theatrical adventure…” – Cincinnati Enquirer
" ...simply a brilliant script…” — CityBeat
" …in this sparkling work, politics is very, very funny.” — Houston Chronicle.
-
Getting to embody someone who risks their own life to catalyze change for the majority feels particularly impactful in the current political climate we are in. I think Lauren Gunderson does a fantastic job showcasing the tenacity and sacrifice of these women at the forefront of a revolution while still highlighting friendship, love, and humor in their lives.
I’m excited that LNT is having me back for another show!
- Stacia Richard
This play is smart, snappy, witty, and wise, with bits of real history spread throughout.
