Sondheim Soars at Lost Nation Theater

September 26, 2022

Lost Nation Theater celebrates musical-theater giant Stephen Sondheim with a 25th  Anniversary production of SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM onstage October 6–23.

Do you know the composer that has won more Tony Awards than any other composer of all time?

If you guessed Stephen Sondheim you are correct!

The music & musings of the legendary Tony-Winning Lyricist and Composer returns to our stage once again in Side by Side by Sondheim!
(Remember LNT is wheelchair accessible, offers assisted listening, and is protected by the Synexis air-purification system.)

The music and stories of Stephen Sondheim will soar at LNT in this fabulous music revue featuring some of the best of the multi-Tony-Winner's work.
Side by Side by Sondheim’s tunes come from such hit shows as:

  • Company

  • Little Night Music

  • Gypsy,

  • A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

  • Follies,

  • Into the Woods

  • West Side Story & more.

Lost Nation Theater is putting its own stamp on this fun musical revue.
The cast is multi-generational, choreographed dance by Taryn Noelle is featured, and the backstories on Sondheim and his songs are given a fresh take by “Sondheim Guru,” Tim Tavcar.

  • “Getting to work on a Sondheim piece is such a gift. His depth, complexity of relationships, humor and humanity paired with the rich modes, modalities and themes in his tunes, places him in a stratospheric category all his own. I am elated to work with this group of artists, whom I greatly admire, to tell very real, funny, touching stories through the genius of Mr. Sondheim’s music and lyrics. - Plus I get to get to put my own stamp of dance on many of them!”
    – Taryn Noelle, choreographer/singer/actor

Co-directing Side by Side by Sondheim with Mr. Tavcar is LNT’s Kathleen Keenan.
They were both part of LNT’s first production of Side by Side in 1997 (with Keenan performing and Tavcar directing.)

In fact, Side by Side was the company’s first Sondheim, and Tavcar’s first directing project with LNT.
It seems fitting to have the show be the first musical of the LNT’s full season after the pandemic!

Musical Director Timothy Guiles (LNT’s A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd) also joins us for this 25th Anniversary Production.

  • “Stephen Sondheim was a giant in the world of musical theater.  I have always thrilled at the opportunity to do one of his shows. I was lucky to be able to work on his "Sweeney Todd" - a show that speaks on so many levels (man consuming man -  the destructiveness of revenge) - and the ending never stopped shocking me, even on closing night.  That kind of craft makes me glad to be honoring Sondheim with this musical tribute.”

    - Timothy Guiles, musical director/pianist.

Side by Side by Sondheim reunites a couple of different casts/production teams at once!

Fans of LNT’s 2019 Award-Winning production of Cabaret (also directed by Tavcar & choreographed by Noelle) featured all the performers in Side by Side by Sondheim:
Alexa Kartschoke, Taryn Noelle and William Pelton. (Pelton was also part of Little Night Music, Into the Woods, and Sweeney Todd).

Samuel J Biondolillo (Lighting) as well as Founding Artistic Director Kim Bent (Scenic) return after collaborating on Both Eyes Open: The Annie Oakley Story to helm the design for the show.

Sondheim is one of the best at telling wickedly entertaining stories, and voicing - with acerbic wit, style, and intricate wordplay - what his characters desire. He is a consummate storyteller and Lost Nation is excited to bring the late Theater Legend's work to the LNT Stage once again.

Winner of 8 Tony’s, The Pulitzer Prize, The Presidential Medal of Freedom, 8 Grammy’s, an Oscar and too many more to list, Stephen Sondheim will forever be in a league of his own.
See Side by Side. Experience why!

“Anything you do, let it come from you. Then it will be new. Give us more to see...” - Stephen Sondheim
