Going Up the Country - reading of new musical

Show Overview

Reading:
"Going Up the Country"
a new musical
by Eric Peterson & John Foley

Music performed by composer John Foley.

Inspired by Yvonne Daley's book by the same name, the play explores How the Counterculture Changed Vermont and Offers Hope for America.

Join playwright Eric Peterson (former artistic director of Oldcastle Theatre), John (Pump Boys & Dinettes) Foley, LNT Founding Artistic Director Kim Allen Bent, and our cast of reader/singers as they bring to life the possibilities of this new musical play.

Going Up the Country begins when the Hippies, Dreamers, Freaks, and Radicals Moved to Vermont.
From the inventors of the Jogbra to Ben & Jerry's to Bernie, you may be surprised who's hunkered down in our Vermont Hills.

And who can resist the music of John Foley?!?
(LNT produced his musical, Pump Boys & Dinettes back in 2004, with Ann Harvey and George Woodard)

Read the Playbill for Going Up the Country

Production Team

LNT Founding Artistic Director Kim Allen Bent leads a cast including G. Richard Ames, Erin Galligan Baldwin, Maren Langdon Spillane, and Dominic Spillane

All these artists participated in the play's first reading, held over zoom, in November 2020.
We are looking forward to having all the artists together on-stage at Lost Nation Theater for this second reading.

The work has seen many changes from its first draft - and for this reading we will hear 6 of John Foley's full songs for the show!

Scoop Info

You may have recently seen all the actors in this reading on stage on the steps of the State House for our September 2020 staged reading production of "A Midsommer Nights Dreame" by William Shakespeare.
Or in our 'live-stream' performance of Love Letters Made Easy, this past February.

We are so grateful to them for joining us once again as Lost Nation Theater helps Eric & John continue the process of turning this idea for a musical play into a staged reality.
Many changes have been made, and several songs finished since LNT (with these actor-singers) presented the scripts first reading back in November.

The reading will be followed by a discussion and an opportunity to share comments with the playwright, composer, director and actor-singers.

It's always crucial and eye-opening event for a playwright to hear the work aloud, with a hint of interpretation from actors.
As well as getting initial audience response.

If possible, LNT will have a small invited audience - masked, vaccinated, & physically distanced  - join the artists in the theater. But the reading will be live-streamed!

This is a Free Event,
tho' donations will be gratefully accepted and distributed among the artists.
