Tim Tavcar is LNT"s "go to guy" when it comes to Stephen Sondheim. Previously, he directed LNT's Side by Side by Sondheim (back in 1997) - his first directing assignment with LNT (and two of the actors from that production are also in Into The Woods- Kathleen Keenan and Bill Pelton!).
He's also directed A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd at LNT.
Here's his take on the show:
“Be careful what you wish for – is the cautionary admonition to the audiences entering the words of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical masterpiece, “Into the Woods.” More than the plot, what is exciting and eccentric about this particular piece of musical theater is its tone.
Lapine’ book careens between farce and tragedy, reveling in the absurdities of the original Grimm and Perrault fairy-tales and then guiding the characters through calamity and heartache. Sondheim’s score is a puzzle master’s trove of overlapping motifs, internal rhymes, and wordplay.
In short the show is a challenge and a delight for the entire creative team: director, actors, designers, and crew, to take our audiences on this weird and wonderful journey through the woods, as good a metaphor as any for the necessity to come together and survive the problems presented by a big and brutal world"
