Hilarious and Historical! Piecework: When We Were French comes to Lost Nation Theater’s Winterfest!: Feb 11—14.

Abby Paige in Piecework When We Were French 2

“Humorous, gripping, touching. Don’t Miss It!” – David Budbill.

Our History Comes In Pieces. We Stitch It Together.

In her original show, Piecework: When We Were French, comedian Abby Paige (who is familiar to audiences through her performances in LNT’s David Budbill’s Judevine as well as Vermont Public Television’s Windy Acres) expertly sketches a wide variety of unpredictable characters in stories drawn from the North Country’s immigrant experience. Exploring her family background and the practice of taking “piecework” home from textile factories, Paige stitches together a colorful quilt of equally colorful men and women remembering Vermont’s not-too-distant past.

The show is both hilarious and moving.  Paige is stellar.

And if you enjoyed Lost Nation Theater’s STONE (about the Barre granite community) – you’ll love Piecework: When We Were French.

It’s at Lost Nation Theater’s intimate home within City Hall Auditorium Arts Center in downtown Montpelier, now through Feb. 14!

South Burlington native Abby Paige grew up in a generation of Vermonters who saw the most visible aspects of its Franco-American heritage fading.  She decided to do something about it.  She spent nearly a year digging into books, listening to oral histories at the Vermont Folklife Center, speaking with members of her extended Franco-Vermont family, and meeting North Country community leaders who keep in touch with their French Canadian roots.

Paige’s research and writing resulted in the creation of her new and acclaimed one-woman show, Piecework: When We Were French. She brings ten colorful Franco-Vermont characters of all ages & genders to life on stage, including the irrepressible housekeeper at Burlington’s St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the first French-Canadian parish in the United States.

Piecework: When We Were French premiered last summer at Burlington’s Champlain 400 festival, selling out each night and exceeding audience expectations. Theatergoers voiced appreciation for Paige’s poignant, humorous, authentic, and entertaining performance:

“This is a fantastic show! Not to be missed. I went with my Frankaphone in-laws and had more fun than I can tell you!” – Kim Ward

Abby Paige “Abby Paige is wonderful! This was the most amazing theater experience of my life. I loved it!” – Susan Plunkett.

Performances are at 7:30pm Thursdays through Saturdays and 2pm on Sundays at Montpelier City Hall.

Plus Opening Night will feature a post-show discussion with Ms. Paige about the creation of her show.
